My graduate research project was conducting Kirby Bauer broth microdilution testing with gossypol/acetic acid on Staphylococcus aureus SH1000/COL and achieved minimal bactericidal concentrations of 250 µg/mL. Gossypol is a cotton terpenoid that is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-malarial, and anti-inflammatory. Gossypol/acetic acid is currently in phase 2 clinical trials as AT-101 by Ascenta and is their lead cancer drug, since gossypol binds to tumors expressing BCL-2 and BCL-XL markers and triggers apoptosis.
