Biotech Executive John Collar Named Executive Director of the Colorado BioScience Association

Following an extensive national search, John Collar, Chief Operating Officer of Westminster-based Matrilinex, has been named Executive Director of the Colorado BioScience Association (CBSA), effective December 8, 2008. A seasoned senior executive, Collar has a background of solid corporate experience with a proven track record for strategic planning, managing to metrics, and c-level operational responsibilities. He succeeds Denise Brown, Founding Executive Director of CBSA, who retired from the association in September after six years of dedicated service.

Colorado has a unique problem. It is the third most educated state in the United States but, paradoxically, most of its hightechnology and scientific workforce come from outside the area. Recently, the Colorado Bioscience Association (CBSA) surveyed its biotechnology, medical device and agbiotech company members about workforce and education issues. What the organization heard back was concern about the future: companies wanted a focus on promoting bioscience careers within local schools from kindergarten to grade 12. Moreover, the responses indicated that companies have their own undergraduate and graduate internship programs and wanted to see CBSA concentrate its efforts at the high school level.

In the next three years, Northern Colorado's Bioscience companies expect to grow their workforces about 35 percent, according to a recent survey of the industry. The survey included 15 Northern Colorado companies working in medical devices, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biofuels. In all, the 15 companies employ 547 in the region and expect to add a total of 196 new positions in the next three years. In line with that, 67 percent of the companies surveyed expect to need physical expansion of their facilities.
